I am all about the green. I can't eat a meal that doesn't have at least 50% of my plate full of leafy greens. I drink my greens in smoothies, start my morning with moringa powder (yes, even before my coffee), mix greens into my omelettes, and eat at least two salads a day. I even grow my own sprouts.
The other day I had that awesome AHA! moment. It dawned on me how I became such a lover of nature, plants, greens, organic gardening and well just veggies in general since I follow a plant based pescatarian diet. I have gone in and out of various forms of vegetarianism since I was in university. I have never really been a lover of meat and have always struggled to get enough meat protein into my diet. I can remember as a child being forced to sit and eat my meat before I could leave the table. Boy that was painful. But give me a plate of broccoli and I would be licking it clean!
Picture this....as a child I have vivid memories every day of my hard working father coming home from a long day of meetings and work, still in his suit and tie and not even loosening his tie before he headed straight out into the garden to check on his lilies, tomato plants, and to prune off some dead flowers and leaves that had turned brown.
Seeing his passion and knowing that his garden was always his happy place, even after a long stressful day, I firmly believe started me off on the path of loving growing flowers, fruit and vegetables using my own hands and enjoying the fruits of my labour. When I had my very first home, I couldn't wait to start a patio garden to grow my own tomatoes and vegetables. Now I have a huge organic garden that spans roughly 32 square feet of gorgeous plants that I carefully plan out and involve my teenage daughters to assist. I get such immense pleasure from growing and then serving up whatever comes from my harvest.
This green passion of mine is what led to my love of natural skincare, knowing how everything good comes from the earth. The same immense satisfaction I get from growing my own lettuce is what I feel when I formulate a batch of plant based skincare knowing that it is promoting health and wellness in those that use it. All of my skincare products are formulated using plant based ingredients such oils, butters, essential oils, and natural preservatives that all come from mother nature.
It is funny how our childhood really does shape our choices as adults. I can only hope that my own children will continue down this path and make green choices that are good for their bodies and good for the earth. And of course to keep growing their own beautiful crops when they have a family of their own.
